I’m a boot fanatic! They’re pretty much all I wear through the Fall and Winter, but NOT ALL BOOTS ARE CREATED EQUAL. New York City streets are tough, and I have worn through my fair share of boots. Even ones that say they last forever.

In my experience, quality and brand longevity often go hand in hand with shoes. Those “heritage” brands that come to mind, are iconic for a reason. Today, I’m styling for one of my favorites, Clarks, two different ways! You may know them for their quintessential desert boot with the crepe rubber sole, but they have everything from sneakers to dress shoes. They’re also available on Zappos, who have free shipping, a ton of different styles and the kindest customer service I have encountered in a long time. I have ordered from them a number of times and have always loved my experience!

Fun fact: Clarks was founded in 1825 and their first design was a slipper made from sheepskin remnants. That was considered innovative at the time. Their production systems have advanced since then, but that’s over 190 years worth of making shoes.

For this first look, boots and denim was an obvious combo. I loved how the high shine and slight pop of color really finished off an otherwise muted look though. It elevates the whole outfit. The mahogany color is also kind of unexpected. It’s just a hint warmer than your standard brown boot and sets you apart.

For my second look, I wanted to skew a bit more vintage. I liked how the burgundy stripe in the plaid pants played off the color of the boots. The warm tones in the jacket and sweater pull everything together nicely. It’s understated, but effortlessly chic at the same time.

70’s inspired, but feels modern.

So let’s boil it down, cuz this “Clarksdale Rich” boot has all of the elements I look for in a boot:

1) Full-grain leather: that means the leather is thick. Top-grain leather has the top layer shaved off, so it’s thinner, but much less sturdy. Full-grain is more substantial, has beautiful natural imperfections and will last longer. It takes a little bit of time to ‘wear in’, but it ages beautifully.

2) I’m a sucker for a taller boot that has speed hook eyelets at the top (those are the little silver or brass clips that you wrap the laces around). It’s a classic style that will never go out of fashion. Mixed-media boots are fine, but this style is clean and classy. It can be worn with a suit just as easily as a pair of denim.

3) Color: I have this exact style of boot in brown, black, and now mahogany. If I’m ever not sure about what to wear with an outfit, one of those colors will match and be perfect. It’s my answer to everything.
