A Little Camp

There aren’t many “trends” I adopt.

Joggers and bomber jackets? Absolutely, I’m on board.

Silk souvenir jackets? Not for me.

We saw a few last season and suddenly every guy at Fashion Week is wearing one and they’re in every fast-fashion store down the block.

Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re cool… I think a lot of trends look great. You just can’t adopt every one. And just wait. In a few months souvenir jackets will be a thing of the past and we’ll have found something new to fix our eyes on. Bombers are here to stay. Joggers…. maybe not so much.

One trend I am buying into? Camp shirts

A camp shirt is a short sleeve, square cut, button down. Like a Hawaiian shirt or PJ top. The hem is straight across the bottom (not curved) and it has a “camp-collar” (the collar lays flatter than a traditional button down and the placket is open at the top, like someone ironed it down).

But they don’t all look like Hawaiian shirt these days. Both the ones in this post are from Life/After/Denim. You can find them in any print and fabrication. I prefer my shirts to be fitted, so boxier styles are out, but there are brands making camp shirts on the slim side.

Because camp shirts are boxier, they’re the perfect shirt to layer over a tee. It’s like a lightweight Summer jacket. Roll the sleeves and tuck in your tee for a tailored look. I love a good monochrome pattern mix, so I paired this floral shirt with seersucker trousers. It’s elevated and the subtle tones play off one another.

For something a little more casual: wear denim and do a ‘half tuck’.

I don’t always suggest the half tuck. It looks crazy if your shirt tails are too long. But with the square-off bottom, camp shirts are shorter than most shirts, so they’re easy to tuck. Just tuck the placket behind your belt and let the rest of the shirt stay as-is. It helps give shape to the boxy silhouette.

It’s a small styling detail, but it really makes a difference. Just give it a try.

So what trends are you adopting this season? Are you on board with camp shirts and souvenir jackets?? Let me know in the comments below!
